At the recent Make Poverty History and U2 concerts Bono - a passionate Stirrer against "stupid poverty"- reminded us that the politicians have to do what we tell them! Well, in summary, this is what our politicians are telling you:
The Coalition Government feels they are doing enough for the world's poor even though we're 19th out of the 22 richest OECD nations and the Aid budget has fallen to 1996 levels! The Opposition have stayed strangely silent and haven't made a strong commitment to do anything differently to increase our Aid either.
We have the power so let's use it! A great way to shout out MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY! is to send our politicians Christmas cards with your own hand written Make Poverty History message. Alternatively (but not as effective) you can send them one of the below Stirring Christmas e-cards.
First, download their contact details or find your local MP. Second, read more about the Millenium Development Goals and Australia's Commitment to reaching the UN Aid target of 0.7% of our GNI by 2015.
It shouldn't take a miracle to survive childbirth. Millenium Development Goal #5 aims to reduce by three quarters the maternal mortality ratio by 2015. Tell our political leaders that keeping this promise is very important to you.
Christmas is the season for giving, so ask your politicians to help Make Poverty History as they plan for the coming year and finalise the 2007 federal budget.
