A recent uprising of violence in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has displaced at least 100,000 civilians in a country that has suffered more than a decade of foreign invasion and civil war. Ten years on, the real cost of the conflict becomes clearer, with millions killed and the lives of civilians devastated through disease, hunger and poverty. The East of DRC has some of the most incredibly fertile land in Africa but people cannot farm the land because it is simply unsafe.

The UN and up to 83 aid organisations are on the ground, and World Vision’s Madeline Wilson was there in July and STIR caught up with her.
